The Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has responded to the European Commission’s critical assessment
Publika․The Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has responded to the European Commission’s critical assessment, which stated that due to the actions of the ruling Georgian Dream party, “Georgia is a candidate country in name only.” The statement was part of the European Union’s 2025 Enlargement Report.
The Foreign Ministry dismissed the criticism of Georgian Dream as “unfoundedly negative” and accused the European Commission of bias toward Georgia. It reiterated that the country remains committed to its agreements with the EU and continues to fulfil its obligations to “advance closer to European standards in the process of European integration.”
“It is regrettable that the European Commission’s report offers a biased assessment of several developments in Georgia—something that comes as no surprise, especially after EU institutions stubbornly turned a blind eye to the attacks and violence directed against Georgian state institutions during the October 4, 2025, local elections in Tbilisi.
Georgia remains fully committed to its agreements with the European Union and continues to faithfully implement the obligations under the Association Agreement to ensure the country’s alignment with European standards,” the Ministry’s statement reads.
